The islands are around 600 miles or 1000 kilometers away from Ecuador. The islands themselves are all around 1,000,000 - 5,000,000 years old. But something more recent is the Galapagos Marine Reserve, which is one of the largest in the world, that surrounds the Galapagos islands.

With so many islands, the Galapagos have much room for variety in their flora, fauna and topography. But generally, the Galapagos are tropical with beaches, mountains, and volcanoes.

The flora and fauna are so unique only to the Galapagos, that Charles Darwin visited in 1835, and came up with his theory of evolution, inspired by his finches on the islands.
